Positive feedback for statewide delivery of tenancy workshops

The Building Tenancy Skills (BTS) team has delivered over 20 Renting with Confidence Workshops, from Broome to Kalgoorlie to Albany.

At the recent meeting of the Building Tenancy Skills Advisory Group, Project Manager Donna Turner thanked everyone involved, particularly the tenants with disability and organisations who codesigned the tenancy fact sheets and videos.

Participants Increased Knowledge

Mariana Atkins from the Centre for Social Impact at UWA provided results from participant feedback surveys. Feedback from tenants who attended has been supportive with everyone indicating an increased level of knowledge around their rights and responsibilities as tenants.

Regional Support Important

A standout from the Workshops was the support provided by Ros and Joan Sedgwick from the Carnarvon Family Support Service. They assisted 17 women to attend the recent workshop at Gwoonwardu Mia Aboriginal Cultural Centre. We shared these Blurred Borders tenancy resources for public housing tenants, produced by Legal Aid WA and Consumer Protection. A big shout out to Joe Fitch in Northam for organising a community round table of service providers, local government and Housing Authority representatives to discuss tenancy issues.

Donna has also been holding focus groups with particular groups of tenants to learn more about the challenges they experience and is grateful for the invitation from Tina Ugle at Noongar Mia Mia to work alongside Elders and Aboriginal tenants to understand the importance of cultural safety in tenancy sustainment.

Project Extension

With the BTS contract now extended until April 2024, another 16 workshops will be delivered, in partnerships with organisations that work with tenants who are in need of support including parents of children with disabilities and young adults with disabilities.

Host a Workshop

If your clients are tenants, call us to discuss hosting a Workshop. The Renting with Confidence workshop is designed by people with practical experience of renting in private, Community Housing and Department of Housing settings, along with input from legal tenancy and financial counselling providers. We use plain language resources that can be listened to and translated into other languages, and videos.

The next workshop is Online (4 April). Register here.
