To deliver the systemic change needed, Shelter WA’s work as a peak body is integral in bringing together key partners, encouraging collaboration, partnerships and innovation to develop integrated sustainable solutions to Western Australia’s housing needs.

Local Government Authorities
There are 138 Local Governments across Western Australia. Through their urban planning and community development functions they have a significant role to play in housing and homelessness policy. Shelter WA’s relationship with local government is predominantly through the WA Local Government Association (WALGA), the peak body for Councils and the Local Government Professionals Community Services Association which represents staff in the local government community sector.

The federal government is critical in setting taxation and financial policy. They have a key role in energy policy and cities and housing infrastructure policy and funding. Property Sector
Open dialogue and advocacy with the development and property industry is critical to deliver the policy outcomes needed by government and the community sector to deliver the housing needed for people on very low, low and low to moderate incomes. This includes urban planners, urban designers, architects, property developers, builders, real estate agents, property managers. The relationship with industry is predominantly through peak industry bodies including:
