Nomination congratulation

Shelter WA’s Building Tenancy Skills project has been nominated for the 2023 ahi: Brighter Future Awards in the category of Tenant Led Initiative.

The awards provide the social & affordable housing sector with a platform to showcase social housing success stories.

Winners from Western Australia will be entered in the Australasian Awards. The Australasian Award Winners will be announced at a dinner held during the National Housing Conference in Brisbane.

Tenant Led Initiative Award

The Tenant Led Initiative acknowledges an individual or group of tenants who have undertaken a project to benefit others in their community.

“To win this award would truly be a team effort.”

Shelter WA Project Manager of the Building Tenancy Skills Project Donna Turner says the reaction to the nomination has been one of excitement. “So many individuals with a lived experience of disability and renting have worked together to develop these resources,” Donna said. “To win this award would truly be a team effort, however we are also excited just to have been nominated. Our goal was to raise the profile of tenants with disability and this nomination helps us to achieve that.”

Building Tenancy Skills Project

Since August 2021 in a partnership with People With disabilities WA (PWdWA) the project has codesigned the Renting with Confidence Workshop which has since been delivered 26 times statewide. The Project has developed tenancy resources that help tenants with disability feel more confident about their rights and responsibilities as tenants. Tenants have codesigned the resources with Circle Green Community Legal, the Financial Counsellors’ Association of WA, Consumer Protection and Developmental Disability WA to help prevent evictions and reduce the risk of homelessness for people with disability.

Awards Ceremony

The ahi: Brighter Future Awards – WA celebration and award winner announcements will be held on Thursday, 3 August from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Doubletree by Hilton Perth Northbridge.
