Lived Experience scholarship experience at National Housing Conference
Drew was the Western Australian Lived Experience attendee at the National Housing Conference 2023 in Brisbane, held from October 10 to 12.
Funding to attend was provided by Mission Australia.
For Drew, the heart of the conference lay in addressing critical issues: social housing, crisis accommodation, and homelessness. These matters hit close to home, and Drew was deeply moved by the dedication and expertise of those striving to bring positive change.
Networking Opportunities
Networking was a highlight for Drew, despite initial nervousness. The warm and inclusive atmosphere made connections with professionals and peers a positive experience. Dr. Michael Fotherington, the conference’s MC, stood out for his approachability and generosity.
Beyond the conference sessions, Drew’s journey to Brisbane and the opportunity to delve deeper into housing and instability topics were personally fulfilling. This experience reignited Drew’s passion and provided a fresh sense of purpose.
Drew now aims to give back by dedicating time to volunteer work with those at risk of homelessness, infusing studies with newfound purpose, and actively seeking employment in this field.
Remarkable Experience
This remarkable experience wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Michala McMahon at the WA Alliance to End Homelessness (WAAEH), Kelly Campbell, a Lived Experience Consultant, completing the interview process, Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) for facilitating sponsorship and pre-conference meetings with other LE attendees and conference staff, and Mission Australia for providing funding. Shelter WA undertook the selection process.
Drew expresses heartfelt gratitude to all who made this transformative journey possible.
