Ageing on the Edge

New housing support hub and advisory group to help older Queensland women access housing.

Shelter WA has joined Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) in welcoming the Queensland Government’s announcement of a range of measures to address older women’s homelessness, as part of Queensland’s Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021-2025. In response to findings that older women are the fastest growing cohort experiencing homelessness in Australia, the Queensland Government has committed almost $14 million to build new homes and deliver specialised housing support services to older women.

Housing Support Hub

The package, which has been co-designed with women with lived experience of homelessness, consists of $8 million to build new homes designed for and by older women and $5.94 million to establish a specialised housing support hub for older women. The specialist services hub will be a single-entry point that connects women to housing, homelessness, renting, health, and financial support services. The hub will provide early intervention and assistance to avoid homelessness.

Information about the initiative can be found here. HAAG’s response to the announcement can be found here.
