WA Seniors Strategy

The Minister for Seniors and Ageing, the Hon. Don Punch, has announced the development of the WA Seniors Strategy.

The Department of Communities will lead the development of the 10-year strategy in consultation with key stakeholders including community services providers, peak bodies, WA state government agencies, local government agencies and older Western Australians.

The WA Seniors Strategy consultations have newly confirmed dates and registration is open now!

Older Women’s Homelessness

Secure, affordable and appropriate accommodation is critical to supporting older Western Australians to age well and with choice. Yet, despite this, older women are the fastest growing cohort of people experiencing homelessness across Australia.

The Department of Communities is leading the development of a 10-year WA Seniors Strategy. The whole-of-government strategy, which is expected to launch in late 2022, will include a series of two-year action plans that will connect, coordinate, and evaluate activities across government agencies. The strategy will aim to support older Western Australians of all backgrounds to live their best life as they age.

An online survey has been released by the Department of Communities as the first phase of consultations to inform the development of the strategy. The aim of the survey is for older people to be able to tell the State Government about their wants, needs and aspirations.

Organisational Consultations

The Department has advised Shelter that a second phase of consultations will be undertaken to engage with organisations and other stakeholders around barriers to ageing well, including issues around housing and homelessness.

Shelter WA intends to participate in this process and we encourage interested members to also consider providing their feedback.
