National Shelter convened a meeting of housing and allied peak bodies to explore the re-establishment of a National Affordable Housing Summit Group.
While the new group agreed to come together and communicate the need for social housing investment from all levels of government, it will operate on similar principles to the previous group chaired by Professor Julian Disney AO.
The previous National Affordable Housing Summit Group resulted in the National Affordable Housing Agreement being established in 2008, the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) program and was influential in promoting the Social Housing Stimulus as part of the Nation Building Jobs Program following the Global Financial Crisis.
The new group’s membership includes National Shelter, Community Housing Industry Association (CHIA), Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), Housing Industry Association (HIA), Property Council, Industry Super and Homelessness Australia. The Master Builders Association has also expressed interest in membership.
National Shelter is hopeful the new summit group will become as influential as the original in promoting the cause of social and affordable housing as a united voice for business, unions and the community.
