Ministerial Announcement

Shelter WA welcomes the addition of the Planning portfolio to the Hon. John Carey’s MLA growing area of responsibilities.

New WA Premier Roger Cook revealed the changing portfolios as part of a cabinet reshuffle on Wednesday, 7 June following the sudden retirement of former Premier Mark McGowan.

The Planning portfolio has been held by the Hon. Rita Saffioti – who is now Deputy Premier; Treasurer; Minister for Transport; Tourism – since 2017. Mr Carey’s Local Government portfolio has been taken on by newcomer Hon. David Michael MLA.

Shelter WA CEO Kath Snell, along with members of our staff and Board congratulated Mr Carey personally at their regular meeting this week. “Mr Carey is a strong supporter of social housing and having Planning under his responsibility, with the challenges of our overheated construction market aligns well,” Ms Snell said.

“Shelter WA has a strong working relationship with Minister Carey and looks forward to building on the successful outcomes we have already seen since the Minister has held the Housing and Homelessness portfolio.”

Ms Snell expressed her appreciation for the work done by the Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA under her tutelage as Planning Minister, especially with her work on METRONET.

“METRONET-aligned developments address the shortage of appropriate housing for singles, couples and seniors. In her role and in partnership with the Department of Communities the Minster has worked hard to deliver inclusive and connected communities where people of all incomes and backgrounds have a place to call home.”
