Snap Community Vigil!

Where: Front of Council House
When: 5:00pm-5:45pm with a photo at 5:30pm, Wednesday 29 November. No speeches: Just a time to quietly and respectfully gather to show our strength, hope and unity.

There is every reason to keep this vital space open – and we cannot believe we are even having this conversation in 16 Days in WA, but consider:

  • $3m funding has been secured from state government to keep the space running
  • We are seeing the highest number of women sleeping rough in Perth ever on record
  • Independent polling released yesterday found nearly 9 in 10 Perth metro residents (87 per cent) and 4 in 5 Perth electorate residents (80 per cent) believe it’s important for the City of Perth to continue providing shelter services for vulnerable women.

Lord Mayor

We firmly believe the Lord Mayor and the council has misjudged the huge and overwhelming support in the community to look after vulnerable women, and in turn, the palpable electoral backlash that is growing. This is an opportunity for the City of Perth to be remembered as saving the day – not closing a safe space for vulnerable women midst 16 Days in WA, less than a month before Christmas!

Action Now

  • Will you come this afternoon to show your support and ask to keep the doors open at the Safe Night Space – at least for the Christmas period, to give more time to find an alternative space
  • Are you a ratepayer, local resident, service provider, city worker who can turn up to show you care?
  • Can you share this story with any friends or business owners you know that live or work in the City of Perth?
  • Can you write to the City of Perth elected members here to share your concerns and ask them to please reconsider: Elected Members | City of Perth.

We say Yes in our back yard! We say Not in our name! We say we will remember. Either way.

In solidarity with all women and allies.
