For the last couple of months we have had two interns working in the ShelterWA office. Dinara and Bailey have been a welcome addition to the team and have willingly shared their expertise as freely as they have demonstrated an enthusiasm to learn.

We asked them to share more about themselves and their roles at Shelter WA so we could introduce you to them. Read what they had to say below.

Could you do with the support of a UWA intern in your organisation?

The McCusker Centre for Citizenship at UWA are still accepting Expressions of Interest from organisations to host interns in Winter 2024. We have received over 50 fantastic internship roles and there are just a few weeks left to finalise the remaining roles.

The Winter 2024 round runs for five weeks from 17 June to 19 July with students working 3 days per week to complete their 100 hours.

Meet Bailey Kinshela – Marketing Intern
  1. Tell us about your role at Shelter WA?

My role as a marketing intern at Shelter WA involves giving the Marketing lead Shannon a general helping hand in ensuring that all things marketing run smoothly, whilst using my skills and education to offer a unique perspective in the department.  This ranges from tasks such as adding and updating member directory listings to composing social media analytics reports, in an effort to uncover valuable insights and/or streamline processes.

  1. What were you hoping to experience/achieve in your intern role?

The thing I was most excited for in my role was to gain a greater sense of professionalism and purpose, through observing and working amongst talented and experienced team members in an environment such as this.

  1. What has been a highlight so far?

A highlight however has been experiencing firsthand the level of passion and commitment each and every individual at Shelter WA possesses in their mission advocating for social and affordable housing, and an end to homelessness.

  1. After graduating from your course, what area do you hope to work in?

After graduating, I plan to pursue a career in the industries of marketing and advertising, with the end goal of one day starting my own business – so my work at Shelter WA aligns perfectly with these aspirations.

Meet Dinara Absattarova – Human Resources Intern
  1. Tell us about your role at Shelter WA?

At Shelter WA, my role involves enhancing human resource policies. I review existing policies, adapt them into updated templates, and manage document control to ensure consistency and compliance. Additionally, I research policy gaps and recommend additions to refine internal processes and better support the company mission.

  1. What were you hoping to experience/achieve in your intern role?

During my internship at Shelter WA, I aim to develop my professional skills in the Human resources management and personal skills as an active citizen. By immersing myself in the organizational structure and operations, I hope to gain insight into the systematic challenges faced by those needing housing and learn approaches used in advocacy and policy-making to drive meaningful change in the community.

  1. What has been a highlight so far?

A highlight of my internship is working closely with professionals in the non-profit sector and the supportive atmosphere at the organization. Working in such an encouraging environment not only enhanced my learning experience but also allowed me to integrate comfortably into the team.

  1. After graduating from your course, what area do you hope to work in?

After graduation, I plan to continue working as a Human Resources specialist. I am passionate about using strategic HR practices to empower organizations and make a difference.

I believe that effective human resource management and strategies support organizations in achieving their goals.
