Media Release – Preventing Homelessness Together: WA communities unite to address crisis
Homelessness Week has kicked off across Western Australia with dozens of community gatherings shining a spotlight on the people, stories and solutions shaping the state’s response to the crisis.
From community barbecues and breakfasts to a platform where rough sleepers can ask case managers anything, there are opportunities right across the state putting Homelessness Week (August 4-10) into focus.
Shelter WA through Lotterywest has funded a statewide program of events and initiatives that feature innovative community-led projects run by successful grant recipients spanning from Perth to the Pilbara and the Kimberley.
The theme that Shelter WA has chosen for this year, ‘Homelessness Prevention’, has inspired grassroot responses across the state, while pushing for more intervention at all levels from the community right through to government investment.
Shelter WA CEO Kath Snell said the diverse range of events is a clear sign that communities across the state are rising to the challenge of ending homelessness.
“Preventing homelessness requires the right services and funding, and conversations and collaboration in neighbourhoods,” Ms Snell said.
“This week, communities right across WA are stepping up with powerful local actions. These community-led initiatives demonstrate the innovation and compassion in addressing the homelessness crisis in our state. These projects not only provide immediate support but tackle the stigma, stereotypes and systemic issues that keep people trapped in housing insecurity.
“Homelessness Week is a timely reminder of what can be done if we come together as a community and fight for a better future. From prevention strategies to direct support, our grant recipients are creating meaningful connections.
“We can end homelessness with commitment, coordination and community. We need the right level of investment that will match the scale of the crisis, from federal and state government through to community action. The diversity of approaches this week shows that effective homelessness responses must be tailored to local needs and communities. This week proves just how much Western Australians care.”
