Honour recognises homeless healthcare CEO

Homeless Healthcare’s Dr Andrew Davies has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Dr Davies is the founder, medical director and CEO of Homeless Healthcare and started the service in 2008 by running two clinics a week out of the back of his car. From humble beginnings, Homeless Healthcare has grown into a multi-disciplinary organisation that provides homeless-specific healthcare across hospital and community settings, and employs over 65 clinical and non-clinical staff.

Dr Davies was a part of Shelter WA’s Homelessness Week 2022 Symposium, in which he reflected on the opening a 20-bed facility. It is a place he said “where people can go when they are too sick for the streets but not sick enough for hospital”.

He also spoke to participants taking part in our Homelessness Week 2022 Lived Experience Walks who had arrived to hear about the essential services provided by Uniting WA’s Tranby Engagement Hub. In his talk, Dr Davies highlighted the urgent need for accessible healthcare for people experiencing homelessness. “In the last five years, there have been 70 to 80 patients experiencing homelessness pass away each year,” he said.
