Ballarat Road, inner northern suburbs of Melbourne | 2020 | $9 million |
57 detached single bedroom dwellings across multiple sites along Ballarat Road. Prefabricated modular steel structures built in regional Victoria and transported by truck to site. The units are fully transportable allowing for potential future relocation. The dwellings are rented to people from the priority social housing waitlist and pay 25% of their income to live there.
People with a chronic experience of homelessness from the priority waitlist. Wrap around services are provided to the residents to support them to maintain their tenancies. Pets are also welcome.
The dwellings were built on ‘lazy’ government land which is reserved for future road widening. The land has been leased by VicRoads at a peppercorn annual rate of $1 to Launch Housing community housing provider who manage the tenancies. The state government will provide at least 12 months notice if the land is to be developed.
$4 million philanthropic investment from Harris family, $3 million state government investment, $2 million Launch Housing reserves.
The project will continue to deliver social housing to those experiencing chronic homelessness until the time that the government requires the land back. The dwellings will be retained though and can be relocated to another site (if another site can be provided).
