Building Tenancy Skills Project announced as a finalist in 2024 Consumer Protection Awards

We’re excited to announce that the Building Tenancy Skills Project, jointly delivered by Shelter WA and People With disabilities WA (PWdWA), is a finalist in the 2024 Consumer Protection Awards. The project was nominated for the Dick Fletcher Award which recognizes the contribution of an organisation towards the advancement of consumer protection.

The Building Tenancy Skills Project is all about the rights of renters. The Lived Experience participants in the Project worked alongside Circle Green, the Financial Counsellors Association of WA, Consumer Protection, Carers WA, CoMHWA, and Developmental Disability WA to codesign information in accessible formats. This included plain language fact sheets, videos, and a workshop called Renting With Confidence. The Workshop has now been delivered over 30 times throughout WA. Feedback from a workshop participant about what they most valued from the Workshop:

“Empowerment through engagement with people who have lived experience of the issues I’m facing as a tenant and the sharing of recommendations for tools and services to assist me in self-advocacy.”

Our thanks to the Advisory Group for the support they have offered the Project along the way.

Finalists will attend an award ceremony on March 15 which is World Consumer Rights Day. The Building Tenancy Skills Project is funded by the Department of Social Services.
