The amended Strata Titles Act 1985 is proposed to start on 1 May 2020.
Key reforms to the Act include:
- Introduction of leasehold strata
- Better buyer information
- A fairer process for termination of a scheme
- Efficient dispute resolution
- Development, subdivision and planning
With Perth’s population set to exceed four million by 2050, Greater Perth faces increased pressure to offer more sustainable and diverse accommodation housing options. The new strata title reforms, especially the leasehold strata scheme regulations, provide great potential to expand the land available for, and development of, social and affordable housing.
Leasehold strata could enable not-for-profit organisations, as well as benevolent organisations, such as churches or local government, to provide free or below market land for affordable and social housing, whilst keeping their land in perpetuity.
