Housing Assistance in Australia 2022

Housing plays a critical role in the health and wellbeing of Australians.

Affordable and safe housing can help people avoid housing stress, which improves household wellbeing.

In this release from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare we get a better idea on housing assistance across Australia.

In 2020–21, around 790,000 Australians lived in social housing in over 440,000 dwellings across the country. The majority (68 per cent) of social housing dwellings were public housing stock and Community Housing (25 per cent). Commonwealth Rent Assistance was provided to just under 1.5 million income units at the end of June 2021.

  • 42,615 social housing dwellings
  • housing 41,197 households
  • with 78,061 occupants throughout 2020-21.

In 2021, most (31,923) social housing dwellings met the size requirements for the household composition. There were 4,855 dwellings that were considered to be underutilised and 1,466 dwellings that were considered to be overcrowded.
