- Advocacy – The act or process of supporting a cause or proposal (e.g. speaking up for the rights, interests, or views of a person or group of people).[1] [2]
- Best practice – A procedure that has been shown by research and experience to produce optimal results and that is established or proposed as a standard suitable for widespread adoption[3]
- Co-Design – To design (something) cooperatively by working with one or more people jointly.[4]
- Co-Production – To produce and deliver (something) cooperatively by working with one more people jointly.[5] [6]
- Community Sector – (or not-for-profit sector) A sector that encompasses a broad range of organisations all pursuing a range of community focused purposes through service delivery, grant-making and other activities which advance areas such as housing, health, education, social welfare.[7]
- Consumer – A person or a group who intends to order, orders, or uses provided services primarily for personal, social, family, household and similar needs.[8]
- Diversity – Inclusion of people representing more than one group, for example, ethnicity, religion, language, sexual orientation, socioeconomic circumstance.[9]
- Empathy – The ability to share someone else’s feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person’s situation[10]
- Engagement – A person’s involvement in and commitment to work, and to their company’s strategy, mission and value proposal.[11]
- Equity – the situation in which everyone is treated fairly and equally. [12]
- Homelessness – When a person does not have suitable accommodation alternatives they are considered homeless if their current living arrangement is in a dwelling that is inadequate; or has no tenure, or if their initial tenure is short and not extendable; or does not allow them to have control of, and access to space for social relations.[13]
- Housing Insecurity – Households in the bottom 40 per cent of the income distribution ranges paying more than 30 per cent of their gross income on mortgage or rent payments are in housing affordability stress (housing stress).[14]
- Inclusiveness – The action or state of including or of being included within a group, structure, or system.[15]
- Intellectual property – The property of a person’s mind or proprietary knowledge and created ideas (e.g. an invention, trademark, design, concept).[16]
- Lived experience – Personal knowledge about the world gained through direct, first-hand involvement in everyday events rather than through representations constructed by other people.[17]
- Lived Experience Advocate – A person who has lived experience of an issue and advocates to protect the rights of others, for example by giving advice or trying to improve laws relating to the issue (a HOME advocate is of the same definition but specific to homelessness and being a HOME Project participant).[18]
- Lived expertise – The knowledge and expertise gained through first-hand lived experience of a system, policy, service, o program.[19]
- Participation payment (honorarium payment) – An honorary reward for voluntary services, or a fee for professional services voluntarily rendered.[20]
- Paternalism – The policy or practice on the part of people in authority of restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those subordinate to or otherwise dependent on them in their supposed interest.[21]
- Remuneration – Payment for agreed work and services.[22]
- Substantive Equality – An output or outcome of the policies, procedures, and practices in addressing and preventing systemic discrimination, marginalisation, and unequal distribution in order to achieve equal results for basic human rights, opportunities, and access to goods and services.[23]
- Tokenistic – The practice of making only a perfunctory or symbolic effort (especially surrounding minority groups) to do a thing only to prevent criticism and give the appearance that people are being treated fairly.[24]
- Trauma – A psychological, emotional or physical response to a past event or experience that is deeply distressing, painful or disturbing. [25]
