Following on from the COVID-19 Taskforce on Homelessness meeting, please see below a recap of the key points and updates on some evolving issues:
Response to address rough sleepers outside Tranby Centre
We have been working closely with UnitingCare West (UCW) to find a rapid solution to escalation of rough sleepers in the carpark outside Tranby. Urgent discussions have been held over the past 48 hours to support UCW.
Rough Sleeper Audit
With a reported increase in new people sleeping rough, the Taskforce agreed for the need to capture the data on what is happening on the ground.
Quantifying available accommodation
An audit of sector accommodation capacity will be conducted to identify available beds across services, should COVID-19 be detected amongst the homeless cohort and isolation be required. St Bart’s Samantha Drury and Shelter WA’s Michelle Mackenzie will lead this action. In the meantime, I can be contacted directly if there is an emergency accommodation requirement.
COVID-19 Taskforce on Homelessness Plan
This is the first Taskforce to develop a plan for its short to medium term COVID-19 homelessness responses, which will form the basis for the other Taskforces to follow. Government will work through the authorisation pathway to support initiatives proposed by the Taskforce to ensure that we have the necessary strategic rigour.
The next weekly Taskforce meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 30 April.
