On 27 April 2016, Shelter WA, COTA WA and Aged & Community Services WA (ACSWA) are hosting a sector consultation to inform the development of a Seniors’ Housing Strategy by the Housing Authority. The strategy aims to address some of the significant housing challenges facing Western Australian seniors now and into the future.
Stakeholders are invited to participate in a workshop to contribute ideas and solutions to this important issue.
The Western Australian population is aging rapidly and will continue to do so for several decades. As our population lives longer, more people will reach retirement with insufficient income and assets to access appropriate housing. Without action, housing stress among seniors and the pressure on Western Australia's social housing system will continue to grow. For those who own their home, or have the capacity to rent in the private market, we need to ensure that there are appropriate housing choices to accommodate their needs as they age.
The aim of this consultation is to explore how government, industry and the community sector can work together to increase the diversity and choice of housing options for Western Australian seniors, including those most in need, so they can age well in their community.
This is an opportunity for organisations with an interest in seniors’ housing to influence the Housing Authority’s approach to addressing the growing demand for seniors’ housing in Western Australia.
