Given the fundamental role of housing in determining social and economic outcomes, including poverty, health and mental health, Shelter WA works closely with the following peak bodies on housing policy and advocacy, combining our deep knowledge of housing policy with their expertise on different cohorts.

Local Government Authorities
There are 138 Local Governments across Western Australia. Through their urban planning and community development functions they have a significant role to play in housing and homelessness policy. Shelter WA’s relationship with local government is predominantly through the WA Local Government Association (WALGA), the peak body for Councils and the Local Government Professionals Community Services Association which represents staff in the local government community sector.
State Government Agencies
Shelter WA plays a significant role in assisting and advocating to government departments whose policies and programs can facilitate or deter housing outcomes for people, in particular people on very low and low to moderate incomes. This includes:
Federal Government Agencies
The federal government is critical in setting taxation and financial policy. They have a key role in energy policy and cities and housing infrastructure policy and funding. Our work at the federal level is undertaken in partnership with National Shelter, where we represent the interests and views of the Western Australian community sector. Key agencies include:
Property Sector
Open dialogue and advocacy with the development and property industry is critical to deliver the policy outcomes needed by government and the community sector to deliver the housing needed for people on very low, low and low to moderate incomes. This includes urban planners, urban designers, architects, property developers, builders, real estate agents, property managers.
